Collection and storage of general data and information

The processing of this information is based on our legitimate interest in the purposes for data collection mentioned above. We are not using this data to identify you personally. Access logs are deleted after 30 days in case of regular access behaviour. Access data for debugging ("error logs") are deleted after 90 days, security-relevant access data ("security logs") are deleted after 180 days. Access data is only collected in an error log in case an error occurs. Access data is only collected in a security log in case when an improper use of our website is suspected.

Additional personal information are only stored if they are provided by you. This includes data like name, address, and e-mail address in the case you make a donation and require a receipt from us.

Encrypted connection

We use an encrypted connection to establish a connection between your browser and our website & web services. An encrypted connection ensures that the data you send via our web services (e.g. search terms you type into our search field on openknowledgemaps.org) cannot be recognized by third parties.

If you use your email software to send us a message, please be aware that the message you send is not encrypted by default. Collaboration with Data Processors and Third Parties

We use Google Drive, a file sharing service, of the company Google Inc. (1600 Amphitheatre Parkway Mountain View, CA 94043, USA) for our website and web services. For more information please see "Use of Google Drive" further down.

In addition, we use the GDPR-compliant service MailChimp, a marketing automation service provided by The Rocket Science Group, LLC (675 Ponce de Leon Ave NE, Suite 5000, Atlanta, GA 30308, USA). For more information please see "Newsletter" further down.

We use the GDPR-compliant service Hypothes.is, a web annotation service provided by HYPOTHES IS PROJECT ( 2261 Market Street 632, San Francisco, CA, 94114 United States of America ). For more information please see “Social Plugins” further down.

The processing of donations is handled by PayPal, a payments processor of PayPal Inc. (which is a parent company of PayPal (Europe) S.à r.l. et Cie, S.C.A.) located in California, USA. Apart from the aforementioned data processors, we do not transfer your data to any other third parties.

Email communications with us

If you click on our dedicated contact buttons: info@openknowledgemaps.org or any other contact buttons ("pre-register via email", email icon) your email software will be activated and invites you to send your comments to a specific functional mailbox. When you send such a message, your personal data is collected only to the extent necessary to reply. If you use your email software to send us a message, please be aware that the message you send is not encrypted by default. If you want to send us personal information via email we advise you to always encrypt your messages beforehand.

We will not forward your email or the data included in your email to any third parties without your consent.

Social Plug-ins

Hypothes.is

We use the Hypothes.is webservices from the "HYPOTHES.IS PROJECT", a web annotation project to allow you to view and submit annotations to PDF articles of papers that are included in your Open Knowledge Maps map. If you are logged into one of the services, the provider can directly assign the visit to our website to your profile with this provider (see section “Cookies”). By integrating the web annotation service, the provider gains knowledge that your browser has accessed the corresponding page of our website and the corresponding paper/article, even if you do not have a profile with the provider or are not logged in at the time. This data (including your IP address) is transmitted by your browser directly to Hypothes.is.

Open Knowledge Maps has no influence on the parameters of the data that Hypothes.is lifts out during the use of the annotation service. Hypothes.is has a privacy policy page showing in detail their privacy policy. It can be viewed at: https://web.hypothes.is/privacy/ You would need to log out of this provider’s services if you want to prevent it from directly associating the data collected through our website with your profile in that service. You can completely prevent the loading of the website elements with browser add-ons.

Vimeo

We use the video webhosting service Vimeo, a platform for online video sharing and related services of the company Vimeo Inc. (555 West 18th Street, New York, New York 10011, USA). When you visit a page on our website that contains a Vimeo video, data is transferred to Vimeo and stored and analysed by Vimeo. This also applies if you are not logged in to Vimeo when you visit our website or do not have a Vimeo account. If you have a Vimeo account and are logged in, this data is associated with your personal account.

Open Knowledge Maps has no influence on the parameters of the data that Vimeo collects. Use of Google Drive

We use Google Drive, a service provided by Google LLC (1600 Amphitheater Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA), to share training material and other documents. Accessing documents on Google Drive may take place without registration, information about your Browser and IP address is still available to Google. If you have a Google Drive account and are logged in, the access can be associated with your account. To prevent this, you need to log out of your Google Drive account.

Matomo

Our website uses Matomo, a web analysis service which uses cookies (text files that are stored on your computer and allow us to analyse the use of our website). For this purpose, the usage information generated by the cookie (including your truncated IP address) is transferred to our server and stored for the purpose of analysing the use of our website, which in turn allows us to optimise the website accordingly.
