City of Vienna provides support for Open Knowledge Maps
We are pleased to announce that the City of Vienna (MA 7 - Cultural Department) has granted basic funding (Gesamtförderung) for 2026. This support strengthens Open Knowledge Maps as a public-interest research infrastructure, in line with the City of Vienna’s commitment to sustaining the diversity and infrastructure of Vienna’s cultural and scientific landscape.
Open Knowledge Maps has been based in Vienna from the very beginning and is deeply rooted in the city through numerous collaborations. These include partnerships with Viennese universities, libraries and research organisations, integrations into local library and data infrastructures, and joint projects that make the city's scholarly outputs more visible and accessible.
Peter Kraker, Founder and Chairman of Open Knowledge Maps:
"With the City of Vienna providing core support, we can strengthen the city’s role as an international hub for science, digital humanism and responsible AI, while continuing to build services for a global community rooted in openness, transparency and participation."
With this commitment, the City of Vienna now contributes sustainable funding alongside 30 supporting member institutions worldwide. Together, they ensure that Open Knowledge Maps can continue to operate and serve millions of users.
We warmly welcome the City of Vienna as a supporter, and kindly invite further organisations to join and shape the future of discovery together with us.
